The open standards and protocols are the very foundation
of Internet.
Despite the fact that digital certificates are widely used
in electronic commerce, there was no reference implementation
for the certificates related standards. The project of an
open source PKI was founded in 1998 by Axetel, in order to
develop and support a reference implementation of public key
infrastructure.
Since April 2002, the European Commission entrusted an industrial
consortium made from 15 participants from 5 different countries
to work on EuropePKI.
