Why PKI ?
In a context of globalisation, computerized
exchanges are becoming more and more necessary, even essential,
for successful relationship in B2B, C2A or B2A. The confidentiality
of these exchanges is based on a good encoding of the data,
and in particular on infrastructures such as public keys (PKI).
The main advantages of an Open Source solution
An Open Source PKI solution is a completely viable solution and
has many advantages compared to other solutions. An Open Source solution is:
- end-user oriented, by definition,
- an opportunity to have a best quality for technical tools at reduced costs,
- an answer to the transparency necessity giving a total visibility on the specifications and the source code. This gives no doubt about the really implemented functionalities, contrary to "black box" systems or softwares, and improve confidence.
- a good way to improve quality, scalability and feature set of the security code
- encouraging development and deployment and gives support for PKI features
- a means to accelerate growth for e-commerce, e-declaration on Internet.
The winning card of EuropePKI over other Open Source solutions
Many other PKI solutions already exist but they are either proprietary solutions of big companies or small Open Source project that lack of support and then credibility towards public's eyes.
The strong advantage of this project is the guarantee that offers the European Commission's label not only in terms of acknowledgement but also in terms of protection.
Furthermore, contrary to other Open Source projects, this EuropePKI project is not the work of individuals but the bringing together of acknowledged companies with strong identities and interests in the project.
